Monarda didyma is a North American perennial in the Lamiaceae family, the same large clan that includes mint and sage. Like its relatives, it has the characteristic square stems that you can feel by rolling the stalk between your fingers. It belongs in a beginner's garden by being rated for an exceptionally wide hardiness range, from Zone 1a all the way through Zone 13b, which covers nearly every corner of the continental United States and beyond.
As a perennial, Monarda didyma comes back year after year from the same root system, so the effort you put into planting it once pays off across many seasons. With only about ten minutes of care per week and a medium water requirement, it asks very little of the gardener. It belongs to the genus Monarda, a group of plants long associated with cottage-style and pollinator-friendly garden beds, and its upright, clumping habit makes it a reliable structural presence wherever it is planted.
